The Lake Photo That Changed Everything

If you read my story “From Raw Vegan to Carnivore: My Unlikely Journey(Blog post temporarily not availabe, sorry…), you’ll know I didn’t take the usual path to health. This is what came next.

It’s February 2023. I’m in Thailand with my son, soaking up time on Koh Tao where he took his first steps, and exploring the jungle wonders of Khao Sok National Park. We’re cruising a quiet lake, snapping photos, laughing, feeling free.

And then one photo stopped me in my tracks. Not because of the scenery.Because of me.

The person staring back at me in that photo didn’t feel like me anymore. That picture started everything.

Fast forward to April. I’m in Portugal on a retreat, and a friend brings up something I’d never seriously considered before: the carnivore diet. Just meat? At first, it sounded extreme, even for someone like me who’s tried it all: raw vegan, plant-based, Paleo, even the “healthy” balanced meals with lean meats and steamed greens.

But something in me said, just try.

Within weeks, everything shifted. The stubborn weight started to melt away. My mind felt clear for the first time in years. I wasn’t crashing mid-afternoon. I felt strong again, awake in my own skin.

Who knew that getting back to basics could be the thing that finally brought me back to life?

Back home, I took a longer look at that photo from Thailand. And something hit me: this wasn’t who I wanted to be. Not physically, not mentally, not energetically.

I felt like I was standing at a fork in the road:
Keep sliding into the slow decline we’re told is normal after 40, or choose something different. Something better.

I’d already started experimenting with an animal-based way of eating and felt the shift. So I leaned in. At first, I kept some vegetables, because like most people, I still believed they were essential.

But after a few months of feeling better, I got honest with myself. The more I simplified, the better I felt.

So I let go of 99% of all plants, and everything changed. I still like some berries, sauerkraut and avocado ;-)

With my energy finally back, I started small; ten push-ups every time I got up from my desk. Nothing fancy. But those push-ups led to squats. Then to short daily workouts. Before I knew it, I was moving three times a day. Morning. Midday. Evening. Was it too much? Maybe. But within three months, my body had completely changed. I felt stronger, leaner, and more alive than I had in decades.

By September 2023, I signed up for a strength program designed for men over 40. It felt like the next logical step, until my spine had other plans. Because of a genetic condition, overhead lifting triggered a rotator cuff injury that forced me to rethink everything.

With help from my chiropractor (shoutout to Jans), I recovered, and more importantly, I adapted. I stepped away from the heavy weights and shifted to what really matters as we get older: functional movement, joint-friendly training, and smart consistency.

Bodyweight workouts became my foundation. No ego-lifting, no unnecessary strain, just focused, sustainable movement that builds real strength. I also started prioritising recovery: daily stretching, mobility work, and a regular yoga practice to stay flexible, mobile, and pain-free.

Now, at 51, I feel better than I did in my 30s. My energy is consistent, my skin has cleared up, and I’m not dealing with the typical list of “age-related” problems that are often treated like a given.

I still eat about 90% carnivore, with some extras like avocado, sauerkraut, or berries when they feel right. I’ve found what works for my body, and that’s the whole point.

You don’t need to accept feeling stiff, tired, or broken just because the calendar says you’re getting older. With the right approach, you can rebuild your strength, reclaim your vitality, and actually enjoy your body again.
